While I love an ice cold beer, I'm hardly an aficionado. But honestly, this is sounding mighty gross to me. I'm not talking about having beer with your lobster. I mean having lobster IN your beer.

That's what's being brewed in Portland, Maine, combining two of the state's favorite summer staples. Oxbow Brewing is serving up beer brewed with live Maine lobsters and a dash of sea salt. The lobsters are placed in mesh bags and suspended in a kettle of boiling wort---the liquid that gets extracted from the mashing process during brewing.

The lobsters cooked in the process are later eaten, so I guess you can have lobster with your beer with your lobster.

The brewmaster describes the taste as having a "subtle brininess and sweetness that lobster fans will recognize." This may not be fair, but what I'm tasting in my head is old sweat socks.

I'm always open to suggestions for good local micro brews. This summer I've been enjoying the Draught Works Brewery Cream Ale, "That's What She Said."

No lobster in there.  DB
