What Food Can You Bring on a Plane?
On my birthday, I was surprised with a plane ticket to visit my best friend who just moved to New York City! As surprised as I was, travelling can be stressful and expensive!
It's not just the plane ticket that's expensive either. Can we just talk about how pricey airport food is?! Not to mention the fact that restaurants most likely don't cater to powerlifters or bodybuilders. And powerlifting comes with a strict high protein, low fat diet. Will I be able to bring food to the airport without it being taken away?
Turns out, food restrictions aren't as strict as I thought. I figured if they can take water bottles away, chicken would be no question. I was wrong!
Here's a list of food items you CAN bring with you when you travel.
- Cakes and pies - Of course, they might need additional inspection, but there's nothing like a souvenir pastry to bring home from vacation.
- Sandwiches - According to an article by the Consumerist, these must be wrapped. It's kind of like the water bottle rule...It must be sealed if you wish to bring it along.
- Bananas, apples and oranges - No harm, no foul here, the article suggests. Although if you're bringing sliced fruit, it must be wrapped as well.
- Cheese and meat - The deal with these two delicious items? They also...you guessed it...must be wrapped.
- Candy, granola bars, gum, pretzels, chips, cookies and other pastries - These items are also in the clear.
Looks like if I'm wanting to bring chicken or sweet potatoes with me this week, I'll need to make sure my wrapping skills are on point ;)
So what about food items you can't bring?
- Gravy
- Salad dressing
- Oils and vinegars
- Jams and jellies
- Soups
- Wine, liquor, beer (Dang it...)
- Salsa
- Syrups
- Any beverage that doesn't have a sealed top (like water)
