Catching My First ‘Northern Pikeminnow’ on My Fly Rod

Well here is another first species for my fly rod! There is some controversy around the name of this fish but mainly known as the Northern Pikeminnow.

I guess Pike eat these guys and they can get quite big, but this one was a small one even though it was a foot long. It ate my Pats Rubber Leg and put up a really good fight for a few minutes then mellowed out.

It was a slippery guy too! According to the Field Guide is native to Montana west of the Continental Divide. It is somewhat pike-like in appearance with its large mouth and elongated body. Northern Pikeminnow prefer lakes and slow-moving waters. They are considered to be highly undesirable in some situations because they feed on young sport fish.

I guess they prefer lakes and slow moving water...
