Perhaps, figuratively speaking, there will be a new family member under the Christmas tree this year.

Naming a new pet is a very personal thing and Montana dog and cat lovers certainly don't need to consult a list to make a choice. Still, why not compare notes? And when Rover says these are the most popular names, well, it's hard not to trust Rover, right?

Our animal-loving friends at Rover, the most the world’s largest online marketplace for loving pet care, have released their lists of the most popular dog and cat names for 2023. There are some pretty traditional names among them, and frankly, some that lack a little imagination. There is also a little gender and species overlap going on, and rather common human names make the lists. But the site also points out that celebrity names that are currently trending - and there are definitely a few of those - can have an influence on peoples' decisions for their critters, as the year hits the December home stretch. But for now, Rover says 2023 looks like this:

LOOK: Here are the pets banned in each state

Because the regulation of exotic animals is left to states, some organizations, including The Humane Society of the United States, advocate for federal, standardized legislation that would ban owning large cats, bears, primates, and large poisonous snakes as pets.
