The most common word in the English language is the. There’s a guy in Australia who thinks it doesn’t get enough respect. He cites the fact that the word and  is the fifth most common word and it has it’s own symbol, the ampersand.  So Paul Mathis is starting a campaign to get the recognized with it’s own symbol.  It sort of looks like a combination of T and h. He says the symbol is more efficient that writing out the. Mathis has invested $38,000 of his own money to get the change made.  By the way,the top five most commonly used words in the English language are: the, be, to, of, and 'and’.
