Missoula County Sheriff's Department Public Information Officer Paige Pavalone said on Tuesday, that the owners of the home are 'snowbirds', and left their home vacant for about nine months before returning to find the items missing.

"When they returned, they found their home had been broken into and a large amount of ammunition and guns had been taken from the house," Pavalone said. "Missing were two cases of 30.06 rifle ammunition, a case of .20 caliber ammunition, a case of .22 caliber ammunition, and a case of 12 gauge shotgun ammunition. The homeowner said he had collected the ammunition over several decades, some dating back to the 1960's."

Pavalone said several firearms were stolen, as well.

"Rifles and Shotguns were taken, " Pavalone said. "However, none of the serial numbers had been retained because he had been collecting them since the 1950's. Because there was such a long amount of time between when they left the residence and when they returned, that its unclear when the break-in occurred. We're looking for any suspect information that people might have, please contact the Sheriff's Department at 258-4810."
