More Chronic Wasting Disease in Montana

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks report 25 deer harvested in Montana have tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). The majority of the deer were in previously established CWD Management Zones. Two of the samples were from new areas - a mule deer in hunting district 650 south of Fort Peck Reservation and a white-tailed deer in HD 702 in Rosebud County. Those are adjacent to CWD Management Zones.

Greg Lemon of Montana FWP said that brings the total number of positive samples to 91 animals - all are deer except for one moose and one elk. More samples are currently being tested at Colorado State University and results are expected next week. The department will make plans for the next steps in managing the disease. Montana had been CWD free until recently. It was first discovered south of Billings in 2017.
