Be careful this holiday season, Montana. There will be a lot of travelers during Christmas, and the roads will be crowded around New Year's Eve.

We'd like to think nobody will be drinking and driving, but that's not the case, unfortunately.

Montana Deemed One of the Nation's Deadliest States for New Year's Driving

Auto Accident compiled statistics and produced a ranking of the deadliest states to drive in on New Year's Day.

"A California-based personal injury law firm, AutoAccident.com, analyzed a decade of traffic fatality data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to identify which states pose the greatest and least risk to drivers during December 31st and January 1st celebrations from 2014 to 2023." - Gabriela Olaño with One PR

The results showed Montana as the 7th deadliest state for New Year's driving. Montana has 10.15 deaths per one million residents, or 45.15% higher than the rest of the country. The U.S. average stands at 6.99 deaths per one million residents.

There were 11 fatalities on either New Year's Eve or New Year's Day spanning from 2014 to 2023 in Montana, which is significantly lower than in other states on the list. Texas had 280 deaths on the roadway, and Florida had 267 during the same stretch.

But obviously, Florida and Texas have a lot more people, so Montana will always have fewer stats.

South Carolina is the Worst State for New Year's Day Driving

South Carolina checked in as the worst state to drive in, with 13.87 fatalities per one million people.

Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, and Alabama rounded out the top 5.
