Search Ends with Happy Outcome as Missing Montana Hiker Is Found

Here's some good news to get your week going. The Missoula County Sheriff's Office announced yesterday that a missing hiker from last weekend had been found safe and sound.

The hiker, a man in his 60s, left Saturday morning to hike McCormick Peak but wasn't heard from the rest of the day.

"Safety concerns, including traversing the steep rugged terrain in darkness, delayed the search until 6:00 a.m. Sunday, July 26," said the press release.

Volunteers from the Missoula County Search and Rescue, Missoula County Sheriff's Office deputies, drones, search dogs, Flathead County Sheriff's Office members, and Two Bear Air assisted in the search.

The search continued until 8:00 p.m. Sunday before crews called it off for the evening. Fortunately, the man managed to reach a phone in the middle of the night and contact the authorities.

"At approximately 3:00 a.m. Monday morning, the hiker was able to call for help and provide his GPS coordinates. Missoula County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the location, safely contacted the hiker, and escorted him back to the trailhead and then to the residence where he was staying."

The hiker was fine, and was able to leave without medical attention or assistance from deputies.

The Missoula County Sheriff's Office wants to remind people of a few tips:

• Always tell someone your planned route and your expected return time before heading out.
• Carry proper hiking gear appropriate for the terrain and conditions.
• Bring plenty of water and other essential supplies.
• Pack multiple layers of clothing, as weather conditions can change quickly
