Missoula Police Arrest Man for His Sixth DUI

Just after midnight on Monday, a Missoula Police Officer initiated a traffic stop after observing a vehicle run a stop sign at the intersection of Garfield and Brooks Street. The officer quickly initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. Police Public Information Officer Travis Welsh explains.

“The officer made contact with the driver and identified him as 47-year-old Daren Stroth,” Welsh said. “The officer determined that Stroth was driving with a suspended driver’s license, had previous DUI convictions, and was also on probation. The officer noted indicators of alcohol consumptions on Mr. Stroth and initiated a DUI investigation.”

Court documents indicate the officer observed Stroth’s eyes to be red and glassy, his speech slightly slurred, and noted an admission to consuming “a single” alcoholic beverage at the casino he had just come from.

The officer began a DUI investigation that resulted in 6 out of 6 indicators of impairment from the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, 5 out of 8 indicators of impairment from the Walk and Turn test, and 3 out of 4 indicators of impairment from the One Leg Stand test.

The officer then measured Stroth’s breath alcohol concentration to be .120 on his portable breath test. It was later determined that Stroth has five prior DUI convictions. He was taken into custody and charged with felony DUI.
