On Tuesday, a probation officer located 47-year-old Jamie Chandler in the 1500 block of Liberty Lane and he was placed under arrest for absconding from supervision. On April 12, 2021, Chandler had cut off his GPS monitor, just four days after being paroled to Helena probation and parole. The probation officer saw Chandler exit an apartment building with a large black backpack. Police Public Information Officer Lydia Arnold explains.

“Jamie Chandler is in custody at the Missoula County Detention Center on charges of criminal possession with intent to distribute, and use or possession of property subject to criminal forfeiture,” Arnold said. “The Missoula Police Department assisted probation and parole with the preliminary investigation. During the probation and parole contact with Chandler, they conducted a search. Chandler was found in possession of dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia.”

Court documents indicate the probation officer and an MPD detective searched Chandler’s backpack. They found a bag containing a white crystalline substance, a bag containing a black tar substance, and many unused baggies. Based on the detective’s training and experience, the unused Ziploc baggies appeared to be used to store and transport dangerous drugs.

The probation officer also found $585 inside Chandler’s wallet, which further advanced the detective’s belief of Chandler selling illicit drugs. The white substance tested positive for methamphetamine and the black substance tested positive for heroin. The meth weighed in at 96.5 grams and the heroin weighed in at 42 grams. Chandler denied he was selling the drugs but admitted to sharing them.
