Montana Governor Hopes a Flat Tax will Keep State Competitive
As a proud member of the Generation X crowd, (and one of the "first versions" of it) it is still a bit odd to be doing my taxes this time of year. It always was the first two weeks of April that it became more pronounced.
As such, many of us are looking at the paperwork right now and wondering about all those taxes that we pay locally, through the county and of course, with the great state of Montana. For a lot of folks, it isn't pretty. Which is why our Governor is hoping for a flatter tax approach in the coming years.

Montana Governor Hopes a Flat Tax will Keep State Competitive
During a recent event held in the state capitol of Helena, Montana, Governor Greg Gianforte outlined his vision for tax discussions in the upcoming 2027 legislative session. Meeting with the Mountain States Policy Center (MSPC), Gianforte said "there’s more to do, especially when it comes to lowering income taxes, and I’m focused on getting it done".

The Governor said that "historic" tax reform in the past 3 legislative sessions has been a good start, stating "that reform brought Montana much closer to a flat tax". But the state is still lagging in the region, "we still have the highest income tax rate in the region; across the country, states are cutting their income tax rates. To stay competitive, we must do the same" Gianforte said.
MSPC Vice-President Says Flat Tax Could Benefit Montana's Future
The vice-president of the MSPC, also thinks that a flat tax would help Montana itself, not just the residents with tax relief. Jason Mercier said that "nationally, Montana ranks in the top five states in most of the economic indicators that we have looked at" and that "the Treasure State has put itself on the map as a place that people want to come to".
