Experts will tell you that the victims often feel the guilt and bare the blame for the abuse they've endured.

Naturally such undeserved shame is hard to overcome. Thankfully an organization - the only one of its kind in Montana's Bitterroot Valley - welcomes those who want and/or need to share their experiences with some of the most understanding of people, wanting to reach out to help those in need of compassion, sympathy, courage and understanding.

PURPLE THURSDAY OCTOBER 23

Purple is the nationally recognized domestic violence awareness color because it symbolizes courage, survival and peace and with historical ties to women's rights movements and to the military.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. It began with a national "Day of Unity" in 1981 and was officially designated by Congress as a national month in 1989.

An organization in Hamilton known as "SAFE," - Supporters of Abuse Free Environments - is hosting an event for anyone who has suffered physical or mental abuse.

SAFE is the sole provider in the Bitterroot Valley of a 24/7 crisis line and emergency housing services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. They are hosting a gathering in the Hamilton City Hall, 223 South 2nd Street, on Thursday, October 23, from 5:30 till 8:00 p.m.

SHARE STORIES OR SIMPLY COMFORT THOSE WHO DO

Purple Thursday is an open-mic format to share healing art, poetry, and songs to celebrate the strength of survivors and the healing process.

Everyone is welcome. Chili and warm drinks will be provided. If you would like more information, you can contact Christi Kelly with SAFE via email: ckelly@safeinthebitterroot.org.
