I have been with my amazing wife for just over nine years now, and I still mess up Valentine's Day. I really don't care for Valentine's Day but that doesn't matter. Showing the person in your life that you are about them and appreciate who they are is what really matters. If you struggle with this holiday like I do, no worries. I have a list of do's and dont's that should make your Valentine's Day a whole lot better.

Do's

DO celebrate the holiday. Even if you are not a big fan, you don't want to make your spouse feel not appreciated on a day they will see everyone else showered with gifts and love.

DO plan ahead. This doesn't mean you have to spend a lot of money, just put thought into what you plan on doing. Try to avoid the usual "I don't know what do you want to do" struggle that occurs most other days of the week.

DO get creative. If you don't have lots of money to spend this year, be creative. Try breakfast in bed, picking flowers yourself, or have a dinner planned out that you want to prepare for your sweetheart.

DO be honest. The flowers or candy are nice but not being shy with your feelings is even better. Be completely honest and tell your love interest why they mean so much to you. Obviously you should do this often but especially on Valentine's Day.

Dont's

DON'T wait to get a gift. If you buy the little trinkets next to the cash register, she will know. Also if you wait until the last week on flowers you will be paying up to ten times the usual price... trust me on this!

DON'T be mediocre. If you buy the chocolates that the big box store has on sale that will never mean as much or taste as good as if you get some locally made chocolates. Plus there are some great local sweets in our area!

DON'T only celebrate Friday. Sending flowers to your love on Friday so they get them at work is sweet  but Valentine's Day is on Saturday. You need to do something on Saturday as well.

DON'T get cheap flowers. Something I have learned is that women can spot cheap flowers from a mile away. Cheap flowers will last only hours, don't go cheap, remember all your partner does for you. They deserve more than flowers for a few hours.

Now I need to stay thinking about what I am going to do for my wife, we are only days away!
