Montana Farmers Union’s Awesome Donation to MT Food Bank Network
In the face of continued high inflation and slashes to federal funding, this donation will help feed Montana families across the state.
That was a prime motivating factor for the Montana Farmers Union. And the Montana Food Bank Network will be the recipient of yet another generous contribution from MFU as part of their commitment to local food systems.
The Western Ag Network tells us that Montana Farmers Union recently donated 35,000 pounds of pork to the Montana Food Bank Network. In the face of continued high inflation and slashes to federal funding for nutrition programs, the donation will help feed Montana families across the state.
In the press release, Montana Farmers Union President Walter Schweitzer was quoted as saying, "Montana Farmers Union has donated several loads of pork, starting during the COVID pandemic because, as farmers, we strive to feed people, and our food banks are struggling more now than ever to find protein.
"The budget reconciliation cut funding for nutrition programs, increasing the number of Montana residents who will go without food. This donation of pork will help the Montana Food Bank Network provide nutritious meals to Montana families."
The donation is one aspect of MFU's relationship with the Montana Food Bank Network that also includes covering the processing costs of any livestock processed at USDA-inspected Montana Premium Processing Cooperative in Havre that is donated to Montana food banks and pantries.
Montana Farmers Union is a grassroots, non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the agricultural way of life. Membership is made up of folks who support rural communities and family farms and ranches. As part of their mission statement, MFU believes, "No farmer or rancher should stand alone, and we are fighting for the issues that will preserve agriculture and rural communities for the next generation."
