It’s another indicator of Spring. Plumes of smoke are popping all over the valley. People are getting rid of leaves, pine needles, tree limbs and all the burnable trash that seems to accumulate over the winter. It also means it won’t be long until some Rural Fire Department gets a call to assist in a Western Montana rural tradition, the fence post on fire. Most of the Rural Fire Departments either require you get an open burning permit or at the very least let them know of your plans. The Montana DNRC also has good information on this subject.
