Heroic Rescue of a Boy Being Swept Away on a North Idaho River
A family in panic and few options to try to avoid a tremendous tragedy.
What must have been running through their minds watching a child being swept away? And what were the odds of the ultimate Good Samaritan being in the right place at the right time?
That's the lead-in to a dramatic rescue account shared by the Idaho Fish and Game during a horrific situation last month. And it was one of their own whose quick thinking and bravery likely saved the life of a 10-year-old boy.
OFF DUTY HEROICS
Idaho F&G reports that Clearwater Region Fisheries Habitat Biologist Robert Hand was wrapping up a work-related float trip on the Selway River when he heard commotion along the riverbank downstream. Robert yelled down to the people on the river bank asking if they needed assistance. A family was yelling for anyone who may have a rope to throw to the boy who was fighting the current and being swept downstream.
Biologist Hand knew there wasn’t much time. He was never going to get to his truck and grab a throw rope or flotation device. He began running downstream to catch up with the boy. Quickly determining there was only one option, he dove into the river and swam out into the rushing current that threatened to carry the tiring youngster into downstream rapids.
The boy was struggling to keep his head above the water when Robert reached him. But, he was able to hold and swim the exhausted kid to shore. He did his best to calm the boy and reassure him that he was safe while they waited for the family to catch up to them.
COMMENDED
Robert Hand is a 22-year veteran of Idaho Fish and Game’s fisheries staff. Like many of his co-workers, he is well-aware of the importance of undergoing swift water training to not only keep themselves safe, but to keep others safe as well.
In the press release, Idaho F&G Director Jim Fredericks was quoted as saying, "We are thankful this boy was able to return safely to his family. We also thank Robert for his fast action and bravery in assessing a dangerous situation and rescuing the boy. This reflects highly on his dedication and professionalism, and we could not be prouder.”
We can all be proud.
