At about 5:25 p.m. on Saturday, Missoula police officers were called to the 2300 block of Sherwood Lane for a report of a disturbance.

When officers arrived they were confronted by a man who was armed with a knife. The man refused to comply with commands for him to drop the knife, and instead attacked one of the responding officers. The officer was forced to defend himself and shot the knife-wielding man, who was later pronounced dead.

Neither the age nor the identity of the man have been released.

It is also not known if either alcohol or drugs played a part in the incident.

The investigation into the fatal shooting is now being conducted by the Montana Department of Justice and their Division of Criminal Investigation.
