Over six years later, authorities still seek answers to an unsolved case and an unidentified victim. And they continue to ask for our help.

Our friends at KECI TV did some updated reporting on the cold case last week. There are some interesting comments on their Facebook page from readers who are obviously intrigued by what might have happened, speculation on who the deceased might be, etc.

The mystery centers on an unidentified male backpacker, whose remains were found in the Bidwell Gulch area of the Welcome Creek Wilderness, on August 11, 2014. The Welcome Creek Wilderness lies in the Rock Creek drainage about 25 miles east of Missoula. This 28,135 acre wilderness measures about nine miles by seven miles. The ridges are so steep and the valleys so narrow and uneven that even finding a flat tent spot can be tough in much of the area. Most of the land is heavily timbered.

The description of the deceased uses a fairly broad brush, especially his age, stating that the man is believed to be between 23 and 57 years old. Estimated height is about six feet.  No identifying dental alterations were available.

Clothing and effects that were found at the scene included jeans, waist 32 inches, length 36 inches, a black knit cap, Rocky Snake boots, size 10-11, a Timber Creek Dopp Kit, an SOG knife and a Coleman sleeping bag.

If you have any information that might lead investigators to the identity of this person, please call Missoula County Sheriff’s Office at (406) 258-3503.
