
3 Montana Small Cities Ranked In Top 51 To Start A Business In
Montana received high honors from the financial help website WalletHub this week.
Writer & analyst with WalletHub, Chip Lupo, sent out his findings of "2025's Best & Worst Small Cities to Start a Business."
To determine the best small cities to start a business, WalletHub compared the business-friendliness of more than 1,300 small-sized cities. Our data set of 18 key metrics ranges from the growth rate of the number of small businesses to investor access and labor costs.
Montana made their presence felt in the top 50-ish.
Montana Nabbed the 5th, 16th and 51st spots of best small cities for starting a business
The best Montana city to start a business in is Bozeman. Bozeman checked in #5 in the country with an overall score of 60.29. Bozeman ranked 8th in business environment, 33rd in access to resources, but 427th in business costs.
No surprise that it's expensive to run a business in Bozeman, but it's a little surprising they still placed so high.
Helena ranked #16 in the study with a score of 56.96. Helena's highest ranking was 24th in the business environment category.
Missoula picked up the rear for Montana, but still ranked relatively high at #51. Missoula ranked 66th in business environment, 388th in access to resources and 269th in business costs.

Even though Missoula was 50 spots behind Helena, its overall score was 54.31, just a couple of points behind Helena.
So who knows how much separation is between the three cities.
St. George, Utah, was ranked as the best small city to start a business in followed by Fort Myers, FL, Cedar City, UT, and Washington, UT.
Coming in dead last is Cupertino, CA. Actually, the bottom four are all California: Oakley, Pacifica and Saratoga joining.
