Montana Should Be Ranked Higher On “Best Geography” Ranking
A YouTuber named Geography by Geoff (510 thousand subscribers... not bad) dove into the numbers to rank all 50 states from worst to best by their geography. Geoff mentioned how difficult and divisive ranking something like this could be.
"The best geography is such a subjective argument... I tried to make this as objective as possible," Geoff said in the video."
Geoff mentions this list isn't just about the prettiest views.
His methodology was broken into three subcategories: Natural Features, Human habitation and climate. The maximum number of points a state could score was 15. Here's how each subcategory was laid out:
- Natural Features
- National Parks, National Monuments, Total mileage of coastline, forest coverage and mountain ranges.
- Human habitation
- Total mileage of freshwater lakes and rivers, agricultural exports and metropolitan areas
- Climate
- Types -dry, polar, temperate, tropical - and number of ecoregions

Our beloved Montana checked in at number 19. It was lower than I imagined it would be. Between Western Montana filled with incredible scenery and Eastern Montana representing agricultural production I thought we would rank higher. But then again winters can be tough. But then again, again somehow our climate category ranked higher than nature. I'm becoming weary of this list...
Oh, and Idaho was top 10. Come on now...
The bottom 5
A little surprising that Nevada ranked dead last, but after Geoff cited the dry, arid, almost uninhabitable climate through much of the state it began to add up. Geoff mentions nobody wants to buy land there so 86% of it is owned by the government. Connecticut, Nebraska, North Dakota and Delaware. If it were up to me North Dakota would be dead last, but I'll allow it since they produce a lot of ag.
The top 5
North Carolina, Florida, Washington, Texas and California.
That was the top 5. Ok, Geoff, now I'm really weary of this "study." California I can understand because of the national parks, the widespread of beaches, mountains and forests. But Texas? Florida? In the top 5? Nope. Not agreeing.
Either way, it's a fun video to watch. I love a good ranking. Check it out below.
