
Thanksgiving Travel Warning: Montana Among Nation’s Riskiest States
A lot of families will be traveling this Thanksgiving season. According to AAA, almost 82 million people will travel over the Thanksgiving holiday in 2025. That would set a new record for fliers and drivers.
Montana, unfortunately, is one of the deadlier states to drive around the holiday season, according to one study.
Montana is the 6th deadliest state for Thanksgiving travel
Andrew Pickett Law, a law firm in Florida, conducted a study to discover the deadliest places in the U.S. to drive during the holiday season. We received an email from Pickett's team, which I'm assuming is free advertising on their part, but hey, here I am obliging.
"The research team at personal injury law firm Andrew Pickett Law analyzed Thanksgiving traffic fatalities using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to rank the deadliest states for Thanksgiving travel from 2014 to 2023." - Gabriela Olaño of Pickett Law

Montana checked in as the 6th deadliest state in the country, "with 23.06 deaths in car crashes per one million residents during Thanksgiving." Over the 10 year span, 25 fatalities were recorded in Montana - 2.5 deaths per year.

Deadliest states for Thanksgiving driving
Only 5 states were ranked higher than Montana in driving fatalities per 1 million residents, and most of them were in the South. Mississippi checks in as the deadliest state with 33.77 fatalities per 1M residents. Alabama, South Carolina, Louisiana, and South Dakota rounded out the top 5.
