If you haven't taken the scenic road trip to enjoy skijoring in the Big Hole Valley you've been missing one of the truly great winter sports of the West, in one of the most authentic locations in the West.

The 15th annual Big Hole Valley Skijoring returns to Wisdom this weekend and promises two days of cowboy fun and small-town good times unique to Montana.

Attending the races is pretty low-key, but a few tips can make the trip even more enjoyable.

What is skijoring?

Originally a European sport, skijoring spread to the U.S. and then had its "cowboy conversion" years ago, emerging in places like Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Steamboat Springs, Colorado in 1930. In recent years, the sport has become part of many winter carnivals and other events.

Tips for enjoying Big Hole Skijoring

First off, even you should realize that the population of Wisdom increases tenfold. Hundreds of people flock from all over Western and Southwestern Montana, even Idaho, to see the horses pull skiers down the court at the airport just south of town.

Parking is plentiful, but it's best to arrive early if you want a spot close to the course. You'll be parking in snow, and frequently muddy conditions, or along the highway. So an SUV or higher clearance vehicle is a good choice.

While the fields around the airport are plowed, prepare to walk through some wet conditions, (especially with warming temperatures like this weekend. One tip is to have your snow or mud boots handy, and a second pair of shoes to change into when you get back to the car.

The course is frequently windy, so be sure and layer up and wear sunglasses to protect from the glare when the sun comes out.

Be prepared to meet people and have a great time

The races are all about meeting people, and local residents love to strike up a combination. There are also plenty of vendors at the race course, with merchandise and snacks. But you can find more food at locations in town, including the famous pizza at places like the Antler's Saloon, or a burger from Fetty's. The Messy Bun is a great place for pastry treats.

Be sure to allow some time to browse for gifts at The Silver Mine or the Beaverslide.

Schedule for Big Hole Skijoring 2025

Races begin Saturday at 12:30 pm, and Sunday at 11:30 am. Arrive early because the length of the races depends on many entries there are, and sometimes can finish within a couple of hours, depending on turnout.

Admission is free, but there's a suggested gate donation of $5 per car/$3 per person, with proceeds supporting various community projects for the Big Hole Valley Association.
