The Future of Montana’s Iconic 406 Area Code Is in Question
Montanans take pride in the "406" moniker. Growing up in Wisconsin, I never had an area with a single area code.
It feels like "406" is a Montana banner now instead of just a area code.
Will we run out of 406 phone numbers?
The Daily Montanan published an article on March 3 explaining how the Public Service Commission is requesting "analysis that would help delay running out of 406 numbers."
They say that the North American Numbering Plan Administrator says Montana could run out of "406" phone numbers by 2033.
First off, I’ve never thought of assigning phone numbers as an actual job, but I suppose someone has to maintain order.
Second, we aren't running out of phone numbers necessarily, but we're running out of "NXX" numbers, which are the three digits that follow the area code. If you want to get into the weeds, then check out the Daily Montanan article above.
