Missoula Winter Shelter Extends Operation Through April

You may remember, back in October, we reported that a new emergency winter shelter was being set up in Missoula, in cooperation with the Poverello Center. The reason behind that was because the Poverello Center was reaching capacity most nights, with more people than ever turning to them during the pandemic and less space for the center to work with because of social distancing guidelines. Plus, with the winter weather right around the corner, it made sense to try and find some way to keep more people out of the cold.

So the new shelter was set up at the Johnson Street Community Center, and the plan was for it to operate until the end of March. But now, it looks like the center will continue for a little while longer - a press release from the city of Missoula states that they'll be extending the winter shelter's run through the end of April.

The hope is that the extension will allow more time for shelter clients to get COVID vaccinations, and allow more time for the staff to work with people about their next steps. Staff from the Poverello Center will continue to help operate the shelter during that time.
