Missoula County Sheriff Warns of Scam
If you get a call from Captain David Conway - it might not be him. That's the warning from the Missoula County Sherriff's Office.
Captain Conway is a real person. He just wouldn't be calling you to say he has paperwork showing you need to reschedule your court appearance and asking you to return his call. That's what has happened recently.
The sheriff's department says they wouldn't call to schedule or reschedule a court appearance. You would most likely get a court summons in the mail.
The real Captain Conway warns that scammers are getting more believable and more sophisticated - in this case using the name and title of an actual person from the department. Although, the caller caught on a recording pronounces Missoula wrong and gives a phone number with no connection to the sheriff's office.
Some things to keep in mind:
- The sheriff’s department will never ask for money or personal information over the phone.
- A court date will never be scheduled over the phone.
- Be suspicious of calls made after business hours.
- If the caller claims to be a relative - verify by calling that relative with a phone number you know belongs to them
Report all suspicious activity to the sheriff’s office.
