On Tuesday, Shane Stack was named Missoula county’s new director of Public Works. Stack is an engineer with the Montana Department of Transportation and he is the former chair of the Missoula County Airport Authority. Stack says there are some things he learned at MTD that he hopes will help him in his new role.

“My background is obviously a lot of project management and project delivery for the Department of Transportation,” Stack said. “I have found that collaboration, cooperation and working with others has been very effective. I have been able to get a lot of projects done using those types tools. I imagine I will probably be doing the same thing out at Public Works.”

Stack says this is a big change for him, but he is excited for the opportunity.

“I don’t have a background in water or waste water,” Stack said. “That will be something that I will have to get a grasp on, but I do know they have really talented and qualified people to manage those types of systems. We have our systems here at the Department of Transportation and I have learned those over the years. I will learn how the county does things and I will pick that up, but I will also look for efficiencies on how to improve things.”

Stack will oversee all Public Works operations including the mapping, building and road divisions. He will also be responsible for the six sewer and water districts that are under county jurisdiction.
