They're doing a major expansion of a medical center in an area where I assume a lot of elderly folks live. It's going to have to wait just a little bit longer because of two dozen western burrowing owls. The Associated Press reports that the major expansion of the Yuma AZ Regional Medical Center has been delayed because the protected owls have been found on the site. So the hospital is working with state wildlife officials to relocate them. Since these guys live in the ground they are especially vulnerable to development projects. The hospital CEO says the owls can be moved safely and that they will be comfortable in their new homes. Vacant condo down the street? I don't know. But it sounds like there won't be a lot of red tape, protests, etc. That's the way it should be. And everybody, owls included, will be happy.  DB
