Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On March 1, 2026, the Missoula 911 center began receiving calls reporting a crash on US 93 near milepost 86. Callers reported a white Dodge Charger had crashed into the concrete barrier after speeding out of control. One caller reported that a male driver was out of the car and seemed disoriented. Another caller reported that the driver threw something out of his pocket over the median into the southbound lanes.

Fire, EMS, and law enforcement responded. A Montana Highway Patrol Trooper found the male driver, who said no one else had been with him at the time of the crash. He was identified as 39-year-old Andrew Golie.

Tire tracks and scuff marks were observed on the northbound side of the highway. The tire tracks went off the left side of the northbound lanes and entered a narrow median at a long curve to the right. The tire tracks came out of the median and began to show side-slip. These tire scuff marks led across both northbound lanes, led off the right side of the roadway, and up to a damaged section of guardrail. Tire marks and debris then led across both northbound lanes and into the median, where the Charger had struck a concrete barrier.

The Trooper's Analysis: Speed and DUI Indicators

The Charger had extensive damage, and airbags had been deployed. The trooper, based on his training and experience, estimated that the Charger's minimum speed was 94 MPH. The evidence indicated to the trooper that the Charger had been northbound on US 93 at high speed as it entered the curve. The white Charger had crashed due to excessive speed and oversteering, both of which the trooper knows are common indicators of DUI.

The trooper observed that Golie's eyes appeared watery, and his breath smelled of ethyl alcohol. Standardized Field Sobriety Tests were conducted. Golie scored 6 out of 6 possible clues of impairment on Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, 5 out of 8 possible clues of impairment on the Walk and Turn, and 4 out of 4 possible clues of impairment on the One Leg Stand.

Then Golie gave a preliminary breath sample that was measured at 0.130g/ 210L. A "vape" device was found in Golie’s pocket. Golie was read the Montana Implied Consent Advisory, but Golie refused. A warrant for Golie’s blood was obtained and served. A blood sample was collected from Golie and is pending forensic testing.
