Western Montana is getting a reminder this week that spring weather in the Northern Rockies can change fast. After several days of record or near-record warmth across the region, a major weather shift is on the way.

Severe Weather Warning: Winds, Temperature Drops, and Snow

The National Weather Service is warning that strong winds, cooler temperatures, and possible snow, could move into western Montana beginning Wednesday afternoon and continuing into early Thursday. The forecast also mentions the possibility of a dramatic temperature drop of nearly 30 degrees compared to the warmth many areas are experiencing right now.

Prepare for High Winds: Safety Precautions to Take

A high wind advisory is expected to begin around midday Wednesday, May 13, and continue through early Thursday. Gusty winds, up to 48 mph, could create hazardous conditions across western Montana, especially in open areas, mountain valleys, and along highways.

Now is the time to prepare before the strongest winds arrive.

Residents should secure patio furniture, garbage cans, trampolines, and any loose outdoor items that could become airborne.

The changing weather pattern may also bring rain and a rain/snow mix to portions of the region. Snow levels could be dropping to 6600 feet, with little or no accumulations. Strong wind gusts combined with snow and rain can cause hazardous situations.

If you encounter downed power lines, never assume they are safe. Treat every power line as if it is live, stay far away, and contact 911 immediately. Avoid parking under large trees or near overhanging limbs that could snap in strong winds.

The good news is that this weather system could also bring much-needed moisture to western Montana. Forecasts are calling for cooler temperatures and chances for showers heading into the weekend, which would be welcome relief after the recent stretch of unusually hot and dry weather.
