Gianforte Asks for Presidential Disaster Declaration
Late Wednesday, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte officially submitted a request to President Biden for an expedited Presidential major disaster declaration in response to the devastating Yellowstone flood and the immeasurable damage that has resulted in Billings, Red Lodge and communities surrounding Yellowstone National Park.
The request reads: ‘On Tuesday, we began working with FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) to pursue an expedited Presidential disaster declaration and secure direct federal assistance for Montana Communities. Today, we submitted our formal request to President Biden. With the support of a Presidential major disaster declaration, we can help our communities with their response, recovery and rebuilding, getting them back on their feet as quickly as possible’.
Senator Steve Daines on Facebook said to President Biden: ‘Montana is facing catastrophic flooding, and our communities need help. He said he, fellow Senator Jon Tester and Representative Rosendale are urging you to approve Montana’s request for a major disaster declaration immediately.
Senator Tester also commented on Facebook:
‘We need all hands on deck to rebuild our flooded communities. That's why I joined Montana's congressional delegation in urging President Biden to swiftly approve the State's request for a major disaster declaration, which would activate critical FEMA assistance and boost recovery efforts.’
In addition, Representative Matt Rosendale issued the following statement regarding the Yellowstone River flooding in southwestern Montana:
‘This morning, I spoke to Governor Gianforte and local officials in Stillwater, Park, and Carbon counties to get an update on the effects the Yellowstone River flooding is having on the communities in southwestern Montana. I wholeheartedly support Governor Gianforte’s decision to declare a statewide disaster, and I am grateful for his efforts to keep the flood damage to a minimum. I will continue to monitor the situation closely and do all that I can to ensure Montana receives the resources it needs in a timely manner.’
Montana awaits action from President Biden for the help only the federal government can provide to help mitigate the damage from this disastrous flood.
