‘Friends’ Reunion Shot Down Once and for All By Series Creator
The Age of Revivals spurred along by the likes of Netflix’s Fuller House or whatever NBC drags out of the dumpster next has many hopeful that Friends will finally get its oft-discussed reunion. Nope! Co-creator Marta Kauffman bluntly states “reunions suck,” at last putting an end to speculation.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Kauffman expressed that the central perk focus of Friends wouldn’t lend well to any reunion, particularly as Monica, Chandler, Ross, Phoebe, Rachel and Joey got old enough to start spending more time with their respective families. Not only that, but attempting to recapture that time in their lives wouldn’t feel particularly genuine:
Friends is about that time in your life when your friends are your family. Once you start having a family, that changes. And you have new groups. It’s not that you don’t love those people anymore, but it changes. But to put them back together now when it’s no longer that time of their lives, there’s no reason for the show. That’s all the show was about—that time and those relationships.
Kauffman also understands the nostalgia, but stresses that any kind of reunion would inevitably let fans down:
I’d rather have people’s memory of [that time in our lives] be really wonderful than people going, ‘Oh, he doesn’t look good.’ That would be bad. And let’s be honest. Reunions generally suck.
Granted, no one will likely tire of asking cast and crew about the possibility, as series star Courtney Cox recently suggested to The Daily Mail that anytime a Friends reunion had gotten close, David Schwimmer had apparently been the one to derail it. Hopefully Kauffman’s words provide some closure, but will NBC throw all its money at one last bid for a Friends revival?
