Cubs of Poached Mother Bear Euthanized Near Charlo
Some sad news comes to us from the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Natural Resources Department.
The Tribal Wildlife Management Program has been actively pursuing two yearling orphaned bear cubs roaming the Charlo/Moiese area since late February. In September, 2018, there mother was illegally killed, and the case is still under active investigation.
This winter, the cubs were spotted multiple times mingling with cattle herds during calving season. There were no reports of depredation, but unfortunately the cubs' other food choices lead to both of them being euthanized. According to a wildlife biologist, in April they killed six sheep.
Grizzly bear habitat is expanding within the Mission Valley and there have been documented sightings on the west side of U.S. Highway 93. Game wardens remind the public that it is illegal and a violation of federal law to haze or shoot a grizzly bear to protect your livestock, as they are currently listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. If you observe bear cubs or any illegal activity, Tribal Dispatch would appreciate a call at 406-675-4700.
