Bitterroot Forest Opens Temporary Firewood Cutting Areas

Starting Saturday, June 15, the Bitterroot National Forest has temporarily opened several roads for the cutting of personal use firewood. Tod McKay of the Bitterroot Forest said the area roads were selected to give more access to the public and will remain open until August 15th (or earlier if fire restrictions happen)

The list of the roads is below. for information and to see a map of the areas, check with any Bitterroot National Forest Service office. And, don't forget to get your personal use permit.

Firewood permits are required and there's a four-cord minimum at $5 a cord for a $20 total. McKay cautioned woodcutters to use wide shoulders and turnouts for parking. No trees are to be felled onto the roadway and all slash must be piled. Law enforcement will be patrolling. And, if you have a campfire, make sure it is completely out before you leave camp. The coals must be cool to the touch.
