Cast Away on Montana Waters With These Hilariously Named Flies

If you're getting ready for some fall fly fishing in Montana, don't forget to bring along Knotty Hookers, Geezers and Soccer Moms.

THE WACKIEST NAMES IN FLY FISHING

Okay, we're not referring to professions, the elderly or lifestyles. Those are just a few of the crazy names of flies that Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks has amusingly compiled that may or may not make your day on the water more successful.

Are they effective? Perhaps. But what really matters is if you do hook a big one, just imagine how great it would be to brag to your friends that you landed that monster brown trout while fishing with Squirmy Wormy.

TRY THESE ON FOR FLIES

Let's take a look at some of the wild freshwater fly names compiled by Montana FWP, courtesy of the website Farbank.

For starters, you might want to take a few Madonna’s Panties with you. Not real panties, of course. A Madonna's Panty is an ant fly pattern that works well this time of year.

If the Panty doesn’t sound appropriate, maybe you’d want to try some Hangin' With My Chromies, a chironomid pupa pattern that works well in lakes.

If Chromies don’t sound fun, you can always hang with Knotty Hookers or Seasoned Geezers. The Hooker is a crayfish pattern, and the Geezer is a streamer.

Not tough enough for you? Try a Duck Norris. It imitates a baby duck and is used to catch big fish, like pike.

But seriously – not that these flies aren’t real or successful – anything with an olive hue is working well as we head into fall. Soccer Mom micro leeches and Thin Mint buggers are good choices. Trout can’t eat just one.

And if those sound too tame, Gills Gone Wild can drive big gamefish crazy.
