Who’s scared of 10-mile runs in the cold? Not these Missoula girls!
While most of us stay indoors complaining about winter weather or going to great expenses to take up winter sports, a group of Missoula girls is using the cold to get strong and learn more about themselves.
And next month they plan to run 10 miles no matter what the conditions.
Last fall we told you about Go Run Missoula, which is a new, non-competitive running and strength training program for girls who are in the 3rd through 6th grades. The idea is to help the girls improve their physical abilities, but also their confidence and sense of what they can accomplish.
The winter season is about to start
Starting on January 30th, the girls in Go Run Missoula will be embarking on a 6-week winter season that includes not only running but nutrition, yoga, and leadership workshops. The girls will be out on the Missoula paths and trails covering ten miles together during February with the GRM Ten Challenge. It's all part of a virtual race to support the girls in leadership, and also motivate the rest of us to be more active in the winter.
As part of the event, Go Run Missoula will hold a GRM Ten Party on February 25th for all the registered participants to come out and run a 10-mile, or 2-mile route with the girls. There will be hot cocoa and coffee, treats and everyone will receive some warm mittens as a race gift.
