Last week, a man wearing a goat suit was spotted among a herd of wild goats in the mountains of Northern Utah.

“He was clumsy, working his way down the cliff trying to catch up with the rest of the herd,” Coty Creighton, a hiker who took the photos that made the “goat man” famous, explained. “With the binoculars, I could clearly see it was a guy dressed up in a homemade goat suit.”

Wildlife officials expressed their concern about the costumed straggler. He was doing nothing illegal by impersonating an animal, but they worried another goat could attack him. Or, worse, a goat hunter could take a shot at him.

Yesterday the “goat man” called the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and explained himself. He’s a 57-year-old bow hunter from Southern California who’s training for a wild goat hunt next year by getting better acquainted with his prey.

The goat suit, which Creighton described as “crude,” is made from a hooded painter’s uniform and a fleece.
