They were in circulation until 1923. Silver certificates were government-issued documents that could be exchanged for silver dollar coins. Anyway they believe that there's only two left in existence, and since one is at the Smithsonian and the other just sold for $2.6 million at auction, again, not bothering to check the pockets before laundry day!
