A Clancy eighth-grade home-schooler has won the Treasure State Spelling Bee after 14 rounds by correctly spelling the word "phoneticize."

The definition of phoneticize: to represent (speech) in writing by means of a system in which individual symbols correspond regularly with speech sounds.

Cody Zabriskie beat 67 other students from across Montana to win the contest, which was held in Petro Theatre at Montana State University Billings.

The Billings Gazette reports the 14-year-old Zabriskie will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee on June 1-2 in Washington, D.C.

Second place went to Elizabeth Andrews, an eighth-grade home-schooler from Billings.

Ronan Middle School sixth-grader Jacob Broughton took third place.
