Beginning Friday, residents in Ravalli County started receiving calls from individuals claiming to be from the county sheriff’s office demanding that they pay a fine by providing their credit card information over the phone, or face arrest.

Sheriff Steve Holton said this is definitely a scam.

“After a jury trial, the District Court Clerk’s office received some phone calls stating that people claiming to be a deputy or a lieutenant in the sheriff’s office and then telling people they had a juror’s warrant and then demanded their credit card information to pay a fine over the phone before they were arrested,” said Holton. “First of all, we never collect fines at the sheriff’s office. Fines are always paid right to the originating court, and we will also never call and tell anyone there’s a warrant for their arrest.”

Holton said it’s important that residents never give their credit card information over the phone to a solicitor.
