It feels like I shouldn't have to remind anybody about this, but hey: wear your seatbelts while you're in the car.

You'd think that would be self-explanatory, but a lot of people actually don't do it. Nearly half of all deaths on state highways this year were people who weren't wearing seatbelts in their vehicles. If they had been, it might have just saved their life.

Going into the summer, the Missoula Police Department is getting ready to increase their patrols, and they're teaming up with other law enforcement groups for "Click It or Ticket." Basically, if they catch you not wearing your seatbelt, you'll get a ticket.

We always hear about MPD beefing up their patrols heading into holiday weekends to crack down on drunk driving, but especially with people doing more traveling in 2021 than they did in 2020, it's important to remember the rules of the road when you're doing so.

For a lot of people, wearing a seatbelt is second nature, something our parents probably drilled into our heads as kids. But clearly, some people don't see it that way. So wear your seatbelt - in the event that you end up in an accident, it could save your life, or at least keep you from getting severely hurt.

The extra patrols began this week, on May 24th, and they plan to continue through June 6th. You can probably expect more extra patrols a few weeks later, when the 4th of July weekend rolls around.
