Movie Cult at the Roxy: Lots of Musicals in January
The Roxy Theater is ringing in the new year with a whole month of nonstop musical programming. This is seeping into all of their regular film series, including the one I usually write about: Movie Cult! Every Saturday night, the Roxy plays a different cult movie, and this month is no different, with the exception of there being a lot more dancing.
Here's what's on the schedule for January:
1/5 - Hairspray (1988) - A lot of people from my generation are more familiar with the 2007 remake, but the Roxy is showing John Waters' original.
1/12 - The Wiz (1978) - A remake of The Wizard of Oz starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and Richard Pryor. The songs in this are pretty great.
1/19 - Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001) - A rock musical that really rocks. Probably my favorite of the movies showing this month.
1/26 - Moulin Rouge! (2001) - The massively popular jukebox musical starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. Expect this one to be packed.
Other movies playing throughout the month include Labyrinth, Footloose, Chicago, Annie, and in a special 35mm presentation, Singin' in the Rain. The full schedule is available at the Roxy's website.
