My girlfriend and I eat out at least twice a week. It's just the two of us in our small kitchen at home. After working all day, neither of us feels like cooking more often than not. So we'll grab our coats, race out the door, and eat at Saketome, Zoo Thai, or some other great Missoula restaurant.

Then the guilt sets in.

"Why do we have to spend so much on eating out?"

"Why can't we be more active in the kitchen?"

"We could save so much money if we just cooked more at home."

Then I read reports like WalletHub's latest and think, oh, maybe I won't save money by cooking at home.

WalletHub Ranks Montana as the 12th Most Expensive State For Groceries

According to a recent WalletHub study, Montana was 12th in the nation with the cost of groceries chewing up 2.15% of the median monthly household income.

"To examine the impact, WalletHub analyzed the prices of 26 commonly purchased grocery items across all 50 states. We then totaled these costs and compared them with each state's median household income to identify where residents devote the largest percentage of their income to groceries." - Chip Lupo on WalletHub.com

It could be worse, Montana. We could be in Mississippi, where the cost of groceries as a share of median monthly household income checks in at a whopping 2.6%, or West Virginia at 2.54%.

We're also not as lucky as Massachusetts, where the cost is only 1.51%.

WalletHub gave us 6 tips to help save on groceries.

    1. Budget
    2. Use the right credit card
    3. Grab those discounts
    4. Buy store-brand
