New Study Reveals Montana’s Popular Type of Wine
Wine is typically not my drink of choice. If I'm drinking an adult beverage, I'll go with beer most of the time. I don't dislike wine, but I prefer beer.
My problem with wine is it all taste relatively the same. A lot of reds taste similar, a lot of the whites taste similar. I don't know what I'm looking for when someone tells me "this wine has a taste of mossy oak" or something like that.
Merlot is my favorite if I had to pick one, but again, don't take my advice. And what do you know, Montana's favorite wine is also merlot.
Montana's most searched wine is Merlot
JoyBird looked at the most popular wine in every state in 2026 based on Google search data, and Montana couldn't get enough of Merlot.
"We compiled a list of popular wine types, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Champagne, Chardonnay, Merlot, Moscato, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, Prosecco, Riesling and Shiraz. We analyzed Google Trends search interest for those terms across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. over the past five years. The wine type with the highest relative search interest in each state or area was named the top-searched wine type." - Joybird

The study found that Montana wasn't alone in its fascination with Merlot. 16 other states searched Merlot more than any other wine, trailing only Moscato as the most popular.
Idaho, South Dakota, Utah and several other western states had Merlot atop the list.
