Man in a Stolen Car Gets Caught for DUI in Missoula

At around 3:11 a.m. on Sunday, a Missoula Police Department officer located a reported stolen vehicle travelling northbound on Russell. The vehicle turned onto Ronan Street, proceeded onto California Street, and then turned into the alley between S. 5th St. W. and S. 6th St. W. According to MPD Detective Lieutenant Eddie McLean, the officer initiated a traffic stop.

“The suspect inside the vehicle was identified as 51-year-old Roy Adams who was placed under arrest for the theft of that vehicle,” McLean said. “A subsequent investigation revealed that Adams was known to the complainant and the owner of the vehicle. Both confirmed that Adams did not have permission to take the vehicle.”

Court documents indicate Adams was exhibiting odd behavior. He was doing pushups when directed to lay on the ground and “moon walking.” Adams could not stop moving his fingers, arms, and legs. He was also sweating profusely despite below-freezing temperatures and clenching his jaw muscles.

“Officers believed Adams appeared to be under the influence of an intoxicating substance,” McLean said. “A drug recognition expert was contacted and they began investigation into a DUI. This resulted in a search warrant being obtained for Adams’ blood. He was uncooperative with officers at the time. As a result of that investigation, he was arrested and charged with DUI and theft. Both offenses were considered felonies. The DUI was a felony because it was his fifth offense.”

Adams has four prior DUI convictions, including a Felony DUI conviction in Missoula County District Court in 2012. He also has a revoked driver’s license.
