Keith Urban Accepts Offer to Judge ‘American Idol’
Keith Urban has accepted an offer from Fox producer’s to judge ‘American Idol‘ next season, less than one day after being named the frontrunner for an open seat on the panel. The Country Vibe reports that Urban has agreed to take the job, making him the second country superstar on a major network reality show.
Just last night, it was reported Urban and rapper Nicki Minaj were close to signing deals, and it now appears the country singer has followed through. It’s not clear if Minaj did as well, or if producers are done casting new judges to join Mariah Carey. Randy Jackson is rumored to be on his way out as a judge, although he’d remain with the show in another role.
In its original report, the Hollywood Reporter claimed Urban’s contract was worth $3 million to $4 million for the one season. Brad Paisley was reportedly asking for close to $8 million — what Minaj would be making — but producers were hesitant to pay him that much money. Earlier this year, Urban was a coach on the Australian version of ‘The Voice.’ He’s also said to be working on a new album.
Season 12 of ‘American Idol’ will begin in January 2013.
