One thing to know about me is, if there is a jar of peanut butter in the house, its days in the cupboard are typically extremely short-lived.

So, what was it about that jar of Jif that stayed on the shelf for weeks upon weeks, unopened? Maybe it was the bucket of peanut butter pretzels we bought that filled the void. I've been working on those since early March.

Whatever the reason, imagine our concern when we received a call from Costco this past Saturday evening informing us that we may have purchased contaminated Jif Peanut Butter. But our worries were quickly quelled when we thought about it and determined that we had not made a Jif purchase at our Missoula Costco in ages, if ever. Now, the bucket of peanut butter pretzels is another story. But no matter.

Yet, there was still enough consternation, which led to an internet search for which sizes and serial numbers of Jif were subject to the voluntary recall due to concerns of salmonella contamination. That was when we discovered that the jar in our house was purchased at the Missoula Albertson's in Tremper's Shopping Center was on the recall list. Was it contaminated with salmonella? Well, that I don't know. At least not yet.

To be fair and not to over-alarm anyone, the item whose serial number is listed does not automatically mean harmful if consumed. But, go in any supermarket now, and you may be hard-pressed to find Jif on the shelves. This was a major voluntary recall, and obviously, Missoula was not spared from the potential threat of salmonella.

A coworker who was aware I was posting this article shared an experience she had with salmonella after consuming contaminated peanut butter a number of years ago. The symptoms including nausea and vomiting are not pleasant.

Virtually every size jar. Creamy. Crunchy. Natural Honey. No added sugar. To-go packs. Squeezable snack tubes. These and others are on the voluntary recall list. If you think a purchase you made could be subject to the recall, and it's still in the house, it's a good idea to do a serial number comparison on the Jif Voluntary Recall page here.

Hey, if I bought one in Missoula, maybe you did, too.
