I grew up in an area where in the dry months my friends and I had to be evacuated from their homes. One time at 15 I was at home while my dad was at work and my mom was 30 miles away. That’s when I got the alert it was time to evacuate. I was 15, had no driving experience, my cell phone wasn’t working, and I had two cats I had to take care of.

I  grabbed the folder with important family documents. Comically, I put the folder in the waistline of my pants and had each cat under my arms. I ran outside and hoped someone would drive by and save me and my cats. Luckily my neighbor saw me and saved my cats and me. I am also happy to report that my childhood home remains intact after many wildfire seasons.

Stay Updated

Director of Missoula County Emergency Management, Adriane Beck, said it is important to follow trusted media sources, follow social media, and sign up for Smart 911 during wildfires to stay updated.

Currently, Upper Miller Creek Road is under an evacuation warning, however, it could turn into an evacuation order. Beck said, “If you feel like your personal circumstances are going to take more time there’s nothing that says you have to wait for someone to tell you it’s time to go. If you feel unsafe or you think it would be a better idea on the road now that’s always a good idea.”

How to Plan

It is important to prepare ahead of time. If an evacuation order is in place, plan where you will stay. Certain insurance policies cover hotel stays during an evacuation. It is important to have all important documents in a folder, I have my folder a bright color so I don’t miss it and keep irreplaceable photos in there as well. Medications, cash, the needs of pets,  and credit cards are important to think about when creating a go kit.

Planning for an evacuation is different for every individual and family, however, it is important to plan.
