Bison Attack At Yellowstone's Bridge Bay Caught On Video

A scary scene in Yellowstone National Park, a tourist has been seriously injured after being launched eight feet into the air by an agitated bull bison.

According to a report from Cowboy State Daily, the incident occurred Friday evening at the Bridge Bay Campground. Witnesses say the man was walking with his grandson when the animal, which had been charging other visitors, targeted them. Yellowstone National Park had not released details on the attack, which is the second in the park this year.

But professional photographer Mike McLeod of Bozeman, who captured the incident on video, said the bull, who appears to have been in rut, was agitated, and even charged a passing truck. Then he proceeded to chase the elderly man in the distance around a tree.

The victim was treated by bystanders before EMS arrived and then taken to the hospital.

He's since been identified as Carl McDaniel, a community leader in his mid-60s who lives in eastern Whatcom County in Washington State.

The Cascadia Daily News reports McDaniel suffered multiple broken ribs, with the New York Times reporting he was in good spirits following the incident.

Second bison attack this summer

Late last month, a 12-year-old was hurt by a charging bison near Mud Volcano, which is near Fishing Bridge in the central part of the park. Park officials didn't confirm the child's gender or specific injuries, but said he was treated at the scene and then hospitalized.

The rut typically begins in July and lasts several weeks. Bulls exhibit increased testosterone during the mating season, which biologists say makes them very territorial and much more unpredictable than the rest of the year.
