What should have been a wonderful night of school spirit and celebration turned into an evening of shock and grief in the northern Bitterroot Valley on Friday, after a young boy fell off a Florence homecoming float and was killed.

The accident happened as students and parents from the Florence Carlton School were gathered for their annual Homecoming celebration late Friday afternoon.

Full details are still under investigation. But the Montana Highway Patrol tells us a 12-year-old boy was killed when he fell off the trailer that was being used as a float just after 4 pm Friday afternoon.

What we know so far about the boy's death

Troopers say the mishap occurred on the Florence Carlton Loop at Tie Chute Lane. They say the boy was riding on a trailer that was being pulled by a Chevy Silverado pickup when he fell off as the parade was moving.

Investigating officers say the boy fell under the wheels of the full-sized trailer and was run over by the trailer tires, killing him.

There were three adults with the vehicle at the time, a man and a woman from Lolo in their mid-60s, the man being the driver of the pickup. A 31-year-old woman from Florence was also a passenger.

Superintendent Todd Fiske sent out a note to parents expressing grief over the accident and canceling the evening's activities.

Dear Florence-Carlton Community,

It is with a heavy heart that I share the decision to cancel this evening's Homecoming football game. Earlier today, a tragic accident occurred during our Homecoming parade, and our thoughts are with all those affected.

Out of respect for the individuals and families impacted, and in recognition of the grief felt across our school and community, we believe it is appropriate to pause and reflect rather than proceed with tonight's celebration.

We know Homecoming is a cherished tradition, and in the coming days, we will come together to honor those affected and support one another through this difficult time. Counselors and support staff will be available for students and staff over the weekend and of course, Monday when school resumes.  Please look for another announcement outlining times available for this support.

Thank you for your understanding, compassion, and strength as we navigate this moment together.

With deepest sympathy,
Todd Fiske

Superintendent
